Treasurers report

Subject Vans show

As you asked, I wanted to remind you of our conversation about how to judge nice conversion vans including maybe having a separate class for conversion vans putting all brands together in that class.

As far as a timeline for the entertainment, Start looking and talking to bands immediately after the contract is signed. Ideally, the bands should be booked before the Council of Councils before your Nationals. If you have a National Act booked, there is a lot of promotion that can be done at CofC and in the following 5 months. Try to have a backup plan. In the music industry, things can change on a moment’s notice. You don't want to be caught, as we were, with a cancellation at the last minute.

As far as a factory van class...NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!

If anyone has been paying attention at our judging seminars, the factory conversion vans are judged as vans that were bought as is. Then you look for modifications and changes done to personalize them.  It would be impossible to define the parameters of the class. My van is a factory conversion van, but so heavily changed no one would ever know. Other vans that come to mind are Mountain and Sam’s, Chrome Dome, Reggie Chew, and John DeLuca.

The have all been so extensively modified that they are unrecognizable as factory vans. Then what do you do with the vans that are built by guys who work at converters like Rick Kenney? If the judges are certified and know what they are doing, the judging works out the right way...Remember back in Florida when you had amateur and pro categories? That was hell to figure out...

Treasures report from Nats and distribution of funds

We have money left in our 41st National Truck-In Checking account. What do WE want to do with these funds? I cannot remember what charity we selected. I remember we talked about some sort of pay forward to NY for their Nats. reserve.

***We need to talk to Rita (I think she is NY Treasurer) arid get refunds for Nats Board and Support staff. Many Pre-regged for NY at our Nats. I sent NY a check for Pre-reging all Nats Board and Support Staff. 30

people at $55.00 for a total of $1650.00.   I sent them a check on 9/6.

Burn outs:

Maybe a release form like what we had in Kansas City for the Speedway. It as required by the Speedway. Just thinking we need to cover some rears either the host group or ours. But I will go with whatever everyone things.

Discussion on Nats: What would you do differently?

We will be doing the post cards.

Unfortunately, I will not be making the CofC, but I do have a couple of items that I would like brought up.

It is 2014, vanning is holding its own thanks to years of cooperation among van clubs, councils and boards. But we cannot sit on our laurels and need to keep working together to keep this all going.

The 2014 Nationals are in New York, so right off the bat you can expect about I 00 fewer vans than last year when the Nats were in the epicenter of vanning southeast Ohio. BVA has scheduled an event the weekend after to further discourage people to go to the Nats. Had it been the week before it would be a complimentary event, the week after is competition for a vanning population that is shrinking. The sad part of this is that BVA had the opportunity to do this in August but chose not to. As far as I know this is a precedent that a potentially large van event has been scheduled that will compete with the Nationals. Competition can be good, but competition like this could further divide the east from the west. We really need to discourage this from happening again. For me I am caught in the middle of this as I have good friends on both sides of this fence, but the only event I will be attending in July 2014 will be the Nationals.

Also, we do have new people coming into vanning and planning events. It was discouraging to see a new guy plan his one-day Northeast Gathering of Earlies event in N.J the same weekend as the Nats. I jumped on the posts as soon as I saw this, and we have managed to convince him to change his event from July 19 to July 12. This change will help him to hold his own, as many of the attendees from the past 2 years will be going to the Nationals. He will likely do better than ever as well, as it will also be an event that people can go to on their way to the Nationals.

CofC 2016 idea

Also, food for thought towards a future CofC. In 1966 the first van club was formed by a bunch of surfers in California, they called themselves Associated Vans. That means that this pastime of ours is turning 50 in 2016. It would be kind of neat to go back to where it all began in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of vanning with the members of AV by having the CofC back in California. It would be a chance for many to meet the original vanners and a great story for the media. I have been in touch with "Belle" from AV for the past year now since I found out about them. They will be having their own 50th celebration, but I am sure they would love to be part of a larger celebration of the first 50 years of vanning:). Vans Shoes happens to turn 50 as well in 2016 ... anyone see a tie in there? I know some California van guys who have done work for Vans Shoes. If this does go through, I will again provide the funding for the van show which I have a feeling could exceed 100 if the weather cooperates. I would also see if we could get more funding to make this 50th celebration extra special.

For the 2014 CofC I have contributed $250 of calendars funds towards the CofC van show awards. I am also sending them a full set of the 4 tin van signs to do what they please with. Joe Madonia will have 10 of the 50th anniversary of the AlO0 and Chevy van signs available (shown in attachment). If you want one of them, please contact Joe direct.

By-law review: Do we want to do what Rocky Mountain did in the beginning and say we will do the Nats on a regular schedule.

Do we want to take bids more than one year out.
